Hip
Hop is in need of someone who is both hard-working and is willing to experiment with different styles when creating music.
Mr. Blackston, a Harrisburg native, fits this description. Having been an emcee for 15 years, Mr. Blackston says he is “always
writing and always prepared”.
In his lyrics, he talks about the things that he feels strongly about such as the experiences him
and those close to him have been through. His style rapping about these experiences is self-described as “grown man
music”.
Mr. Blackston’s unique and clever rhymes can be heard on several recordings. He is featured
on the songs “Final Exit” and “ Da Ambush” on Da Ambush. He is also featured on the tracks “Trust”
and “Gladiator” on the Make It Happen Compilation Life, Music & Paper. In addition to these songs,
Mr. Blackston has a solo album entitled Broke, which was released in the summer of 2002. He is currently working on
a new solo project called Sleeping Giant, which is set to be released in the fall of 2004.
Coinciding with the accomplishments of making remarkable records, Mr. Blackston has won the Philly
Blaze Battle three times in a row, and has been nominated for Best Battle MC on Phillyhiphop.com. Commenting on the Philly
Blaze Championships, Mr. Blackston has said that it meant a lot to him that he was able to win in a new market, where he won
because of his talent and not because he had connections.
However, Mr. Blackston is not looking to battle anymore because he wishes to focus more on furthering
his career in ways other then battling for street credit. Mr. Blackston finds it rewarding to see and hear peoples reactions
to the music, which he has put feeling and hard work into, so Hip Hop listeners should check out Mr. Blackston’s recordings
and look out for his future performances.
